Client retirement
Respond when a client mentions retiring or planning to retire soon and ensure all critical retirement planning topics are addressed.
When clients mention they're retiring or planning to retire soon, I want to respond thoughtfully and make sure we address all the critical planning considerations. This workflow helps me acknowledge this major life transition and ensure nothing falls through the cracks.
Follow these steps:
1. When a client mentions retirement (upcoming retirement date, recently retired, or actively planning retirement) in a meeting, email, or conversation, pull their contact record from my CRM including their age, employment information, and any previous retirement planning discussions.
2. Draft an email in my draft folder. Follow these rules:
- Keep the tone warm, congratulatory, and supportive.
- Acknowledge this is an exciting milestone and major life transition.
- Reference their specific situation (recently retired vs. planning to retire soon).
- Outline the specific planning topics that need to be addressed before or shortly after retirement.
- Make it clear you want to help them transition smoothly and confidently.
- Suggest scheduling a comprehensive retirement planning session soon.
- Use the following example for inspiration:

Hi [First Name],
Congratulations on your [upcoming / recent] retirement! This is such an exciting milestone, and I want to make sure we have everything in place so you can enjoy this next chapter with confidence.
There are several important planning items we should review together [before your retirement date / now that you've retired]:
Income Planning
- Finalize your Social Security claiming strategy and timing
- Review pension options and payout decisions if applicable
- Plan systematic withdrawals from your retirement accounts
- Create a sustainable income plan that covers your expenses
Healthcare & Insurance
- Discuss Medicare enrollment and supplement options [if age 65+]
- Plan for health insurance coverage if retiring before 65
- Review long-term care insurance needs
- Evaluate life insurance needs in retirement
Tax Planning
- Strategize around Required Minimum Distributions if applicable
- Discuss Roth conversion opportunities
- Plan for tax-efficient withdrawals across account types
- Review estimated tax payments
Investment Strategy
- Adjust your portfolio allocation for retirement
- Balance growth needs with income stability
- Review risk tolerance and time horizon
Estate Planning
- Update beneficiary designations
- Review and update your will and trust documents
- Confirm power of attorney and healthcare directives are current
Budget & Spending
- Create a retirement budget based on your lifestyle goals
- Discuss discretionary spending and travel plans
- Review your emergency fund
This is a big transition, and I want to make sure we've covered everything thoroughly. Can we schedule a comprehensive planning session in the next week or two? I'd suggest blocking 90-120 minutes so we can work through everything without rushing.
Looking forward to helping you step into retirement with a solid plan in place.
Best regards,
